The Mixed Six Podcast

Board games. Beer. Pop culture. And a little drunken philosophy.

Author: Caleb Stokes (Page 1 of 7)

Ep. 59: Mixmaster Birk

Though GenCon is now over, we recorded bad decisions made just prior to leaving on our pilgrimage for the sake of the historical record. In this episode, we eschew beer on our beer podcast for cocktails made by long-time listener and friend Birk. Not going to lie…we drank a lot of booze for an hour-long podcast. Thankfully, we’ve been training for this moment for years.

Click the drink name to get the recipe!

Mezcal Paloma (4): It’s rare we have someone on the pod that isn’t already as obsessed with boardgames as the hosts. We Dissect Our Fun, or rather, Birk’s fun as he starts to get into the hobby.

Gosling Sidecar (4): In this Jukebox in Box, Greg wants to know what four chubby bearded nerds like to dance to. Weird kink but okay.

Plantation Pineapple Daiquiri (5): Binge Binger discusses the possible horror of revisiting your favorite childhood shows.

Eastern Sour (5): Scott Asks Mixed Six about skill they excel at, yet never enjoy performing.

Fat-Washed Old Fashioned (5): In This Was a Mistake, we beg — ABSOLUTELY BEG — people to stop recommending anime.

Mezcal Margarita (4): Birk has a hell of a cool job, and he’s Drunk Enough to talk about how he’s not crazy about how media depicts it.

Ep. 58: Moon City Con with 417 Gamers

It’s rare we get to geek out with our favorite local con, but Rick Bagwell from 417 Gamers came by to give us a rundown on how a convention is built from the ground up. The man also has a fine nose for beer, so we predictably got along quite well.

Moon City Con 2019 goes from Sept. 6-8th. Get your tickets here: https://www.mooncitycon.com

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Hefe & Wedge Fruited Hefeweizen: In Dissection Our Fun, we discuss the pop star effect and how a designer’s name motivates our board gaming decisions.

American Trappist’s Spencer Trappist Imperial Stout: Rick Nerdsplains how to start your own gaming conventions and some of the lessons learned from Moon City Cons first year.

Mucky Duck I.F.O. Bourbon Barrel Oak Aged Ale: Since This Was a Mistake was the #1 vote getter and we find few things about board gaming a mistake, Spencer talks about what a consultant actually does and conditions in which businesses should look for other solutions.

Decadent Ale’s Coco Ecto Double-Dry Hopped India Pale Ale: Good Omens came out, so Mixed Six Mock Draft picks the four horsemen of the boardgame apocalypse.

B. Nectar Limited Release #DragonsAreReal: In Ask Mixed Six, we discuss the age-old board gaming problem of introducing your group to great games with boring-ass themes.

Mucky Duck PLX IPA: Finally Drunk Enough to admit how trash he is, Caleb muses on the value of “solving a game” for optimal play versus the happy-go-lucky route that leads to his continual losing.

SPECIAL Hot Takes on Ice: Origins 2019 w/ Blue Peg, Pink Peg

Hi y’all! We just got back from Origins 2019. While we were there, we had a chance to sit down with Patrick from Blue Peg, Pink Peg. We talked about the convention, our most exciting finds, and trends in the board gaming industry with one of it’s most established media personalities.

Listen in to get a preview of what to expect in the tabletop market at Gencon and in the coming year. If you haven’t yet, check out Blue Peg, Pink Peg. You can find their podcast here and here. On Twitter, find Patrick @BluePegPinkPeg

Special thanks to Adam from Roleplaying Exchange for loaning us his recording equipment while we were out in the wild. Find Roleplaying Exchange on Patreon and here; on Twitter @RPExchange.

Ep. 56: Innervium

The dark days of food month continue as the tyranny of Spencer’s rating systems continues. As the rebellion gathers strength to strike at the power that has stolen the podcast from the people, endure another episode until the glorious revolution throws off the yoke of this monstrous regime.
Golden Road Brewing Melon Cart Watermelon Wheat Ale with Honeydew and Cantaloupe: In Dissecting Our Fun, we discuss the considerations required to put together a boardgame playlist.
O’Dell Brewing Co’s Friek Raspberry and Cherry Sour Ale: In our new segment entitled Innervium, The Mixed Six disrupts the marketing space with a game-changing innovation: unpaid advertisement.
Left Hand Brewing Company’s Death Before Disco Porter: Laura B wants us to suggest a curriculum for superhero education. In Humanities Fight, we discuss what the problems inherent in the exercise reveal about our current education system.
Six Mile Bridge Bavarian Hefeweizen: It’s a lil’ fire sale in Ask Mixed Six.
Piney River Brewing Black Walnut Wheat: Living With Humans discusses the phenomenon of Phantom Spouse Syndrome.
Ska Brewing Company Grapefruit Rue B. Soho Lager: Finally Drunk Enough, we discuss the peculiarly temporary existential crisis that can be triggered by a bad hangover.

Ep. 53: Right to Mutagens

We did it again. Our lust for recording is insatiable, and we’ve curated another Mixed Twelve episode block. Listen to the first half of our bad decision this week, and catch up with the aftermath in next week’s Patron Extra (PE 21). Fittingly for a Texas-sized block of drunken microphone rodeo, all the beers in both episodes are from Texas. The topics are smaller than that, but, you know, still respectable: like, Tennessee-sized topics. At least.
Live Oak Brewing Co’s Big Bark Amber Lager: Spencer got to dweeb out about his favorite Euro last time, so Caleb takes a moment to Dissect Our Fun by talking about Lowlands…the game of amorous sheep and natural disasters.
Austin Beerworks Flavor Country Hoppy Pale Ale: The Mixed Six Mock Draft asks the experts to fill the missing members of Trump’s cabinet with fictional characters. We try, though there will probably be a dozen more vacancies by the time we post this.
Darwin Brewing Co’s Llama Mama Milk Stout: Binge Binger covers the slow, pitiful death of the serialized superhero television show.
Blue Owl Brewing Little Boss Sour Session Wheat: Ask Mixed Six is having a FIRE SALE! (just imagine a sound effect here)
Pair O’ Dice Brewing Company Clearwater Honey Cream: In This Was a Mistake, we cave to the demands of a newly published game designer gone mad with power and allow Ross to talk about Warhammer 40K.
Live Oak Hefeweizen Bavarian-Sytle Weissbier: Finally Drunk Enough, guys who get money to sit around and drink agree that the “hard work reaps reward” ethos has to go, but what could replace it?

EP. 52: Our Side Project with Side Project

Weeee’rrrreee back! After a long hiatus, we have returned. It’s a new year, new podcast with…a food-based rating system from Spencer. Damn. Change is hard. At least we’re trying a hot new brewery for the first time: Side Project Brewing. We’ve also got a new mascot in the form of a terrifying trash homunculus! 2019 is going to be the best year ever!

Side Project Brewing’s La Ruche – Oak-Aged Missouri Saison with Honey: In Dissecting Our Fun, we try to balance our joy at drinking this beer with our love for Azul: Stained Glass of Cintra

Side Project Brewing’s The Balaton – Missouri Wild Ale Aged with Michigan Cherries: Janic McC asks the Professional Drinkers whether they seek novelty or quality when out at the bar.

Side Project Brewing’s Grisette – Foeder Aged Farmhouse Ale: It’s a HUMANITIES FIGHT! (cue mortal kombat theme) Alex B wants to know our definition of genius.

Side Project Brewing’s Burk – Ale Aged in Wine Barrels with Apples, A Collaboration with Angry Orchard Hard Cider: Everybody Asked Mixed Six about resolutions, so we share our goals along with our thoughts on resolutions in general.

Side Project Brewing Punchdown – A Missouri Wild Ale Aged in Wine Barrels with California Pinot Noir Grapes: Speaking of resolutions, we share our top three books to read in 2019 with Getting Lit(erature)

Side Project Brewing’s Chambourcin (2017)–Missouri Wild Ale with wine grapes aged in Oak: Finally Drunk Enough to talk HR, we discuss whether or not there is any value in corporate assigned mentorship.

Ep. 51: They Deleted the Tweet!

We got caught! Cheese-it! It’s the fuzz! (Just go with it; it’ll make sense in a second) Anyway, we did an episode on the run from the beer assassins come to exact revenge. We talk about Christmas decorations, writing utensils, and a crack cereal-mascot commando team.

Six Mile Bridge–Blood Orange Wit: In Dissecting Our Fun, we talk about digital boardgames and whether or not they fulfill the basic function of an analog experience.

2nd Shift Brewing Hibiscus Wit — Belgian-Style Wit Beer Brewed with Spices: In This Was a Mistake, we draw the line between festive and tacky on Christmas decorations.

Golden Road Pineapple Cart — Pineapple Wheat Ale with Blood Orange and Strawberry: It’s a fire sale! Ask Mixed Six.

Founder’s Brewing Rubaeus Pure Raspberry Ale: The Mixed Six Mock Draft assembles a rag-tag team of commandos made of cereal mascots.

Avery Brewing Maharaja IPA imperial India Pale Ale: The Professional Drinkers lament the common problem of reserving and preserving alcohol for special occasions.

Blue Point Brewing Company Citrus Plunge IPA: We’re finally Drunk Enough to attack the most fundamental problem of our age.

Ep. 50: The Stillwater Retirement

It is our 50th episode. Absolutely crazy things have come this far. Thank you so much for helping us make this silly show so big and successful. To celebrate on our end, we brought in nearly an entire episode of our fan favorite brewer: Stillwater Artisinal Ales. Join us as we run the tastebud gauntlet!

Stillwater Artisinal’s and Two Roads Brewing’s Ground Loop Sour Saison: In Dissecting Our Fun, we talk about Illusion and Pandasaurus’s domination of the back-pocket gaming market.

Stillwater Artisinal’s Cellar Door — a Dry-hopped Farmhouse Wheat Ale with Sage: Janis wants to know how to handle an open bar at a professional engagement. The Professional Drinkers have some things to say.

Stillwater Super Hop — a Neo-Tropic Pale Ale: Armchair Director sees us redacting movies out of a cinema canon for the good of all mankind.

Stillwater Artisanal’s Strobe Lights — Double Dry Hopped India Pale Ale: Chris wants to know about the ethics of voting for yourself. He Asked Mixed Six, and lo, we did answer.

Omnipollo’s Shoutao — A Peach Slush IPA: Mixed Six Mock Draft has to staff a Cheers-esque bar with nothing but fictional protagonists.

Stillwater Artisinal’s Recess Dry Hopped Sour Ale with Raspberries: We (or at least one of us) gets Drunk Enough to talk about the value of a poker face and whether or not it can be developed.

Ep. 49: Beer Wizard

You know what people love? Holiday-themed segments in podcasts posted WELL after the holiday has past. Even better? If it’s an advice question whose utility has long ago expired? You know who has two thumbs and is great at podcasting? (visual joke…another thing that works great in podcasts)

The Dayton Beer Company’s The Java Man Cometh: Dissecting Our Fun asks the most taboo question in all of tabletop…what is your favorite game? Listen to us make Sophie’s choice.

Wild Ohio Brewing Black Cherry Bourbon Gluten-Free Tea Beer: The Armchair Director’s weigh in on the increasing popular trend of Alamo movie parties.

Braxton Brewing Co’s Storm Golden Cream Ale: How do you balance media usage in household. We tell you how to Live with Humans.

Against the Grain Brewery 35K Stout Beer: Ask Mixed Six talks about the best way to run a themed Halloween party. In November. God, we suck sometimes.

Louisville, KY’s Goodwood Hemp Gose, Gose Aged on Hemp: We Make a Pair for the entire World Series. Caleb’s take is…unique.

Rhinegeist Cincy Made Squirrel Nut Brown Ale: Drunk Enough, we debate the merits of cutting an activity from your schedule intentionally rather than letting it fade out.

Ep. 48: Drunken Masters

If you haven’t yet, check out the official Mixed Six boardgame, Party Fowl, on pre-order today!

I want to start off this podcast by letting everyone know that my Dad could beat up your Dad in a fake fight with fictional martial arts. Just try to come at my Dad! See what happens! Sorry. That got confrontational. I’m glad it’s behind us. Let’s listen to an episode and try to heal.

Beau Brothers Brewing Company Sheep Head: We Dissect the Fun of Container, a game we still can’t convince anyone is actually fun, even though it is.

Kona Brewing Co. Pipeline Porter made with Hawaiian Kona Coffee: The resident Sportsplainer tackles the NFL as a business organization, and the resident nerds finally get an answer to that age old question “How does Umbrella Corp. make money?”

Fulton Brewery War and Peace Imperial Coffee Stout: COM Corner deals with the interaction between rhetoric and philosophy.

August Schell Brewing Company Schell’s Dark from New Ulm, Minnesota: !Venta de liquidacion!

Lift Bridge Brewing Co Hop Dish IPA: In Armchair Director, we revisit the nature of schlock cinema with a comparison of two recent cult films of note, Mandy and Neil Breen’s Twisted Pair.

North Loop Brewing Company IPA Foto: Finally Drunk Enough to reminisce about our youth, we talk about the most formative classes we ever had.
